Abstract
Background: Acute diarrhea is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among children, particularly in developing countries. Electrolyte imbalance, especially sodium and potassium disturbances, is a common complication that can worsen outcomes.
Objective: To determine the frequency of sodium and potassium imbalance in children admitted with acute diarrhea.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at Madina Teaching Hospital, Faisalabad. A total of 150 children aged 2–12 years admitted with acute diarrhea were included. Blood samples were collected at admission to assess serum sodium and potassium levels. Data were analyzed using SPSS.
Results: Electrolyte imbalance was found in 60% of patients. Hyponatremia was observed in 25%, hypernatremia in 6%, hypokalemia in 30%, and hyperkalemia in 4% of cases.
Conclusion: Sodium and potassium imbalance is highly prevalent in children with acute diarrhea. Early detection and management are essential to reduce complications.
